It's coming along...
I've not yet finished writing, but I remembered a couple scenes I wanted to revisit after NaNoWriMo was over. Spent the day reviewing the first crucial scene and expanded on it a little. Very disturbing. I am very worried about Aingeal's sanity.
The book currently sits at 61,780 words, eighteen chapters. I've got so much more to put down, just need to sit down and do it!

Coursera Greek & Roman Mythology class is complete
Today I finished the last assignment I had to do for Greek and Roman Mythology by Peter Struck on Coursera through Penn State.
This was a very intense class but it was definitely worth it. I was given a whole new outlook on the Greek and Roman myths and it has peaked my interest in reading more.
I am looking forward to seeing my final grade in this class and am highly optimistic.
That being said, I can now focus more on writing and completing Dark Wings Spread.

THE NEXT BIG THING
So I was invited to join THE NEXT BIG THING. It is a chain of book and author recommendations. One
author tags five others, who then each tag five others. The idea is
that we all help people out there learn about all the good stuff that’s
just out or coming soon. Kane Gilmour tagged me on his blog and now it’s
my turn.
1. What is the working title of your next book?
Dark Wings Spread
2. Where did the idea come from for the book?
It's the second book in a trilogy. I really can't say I had this idea, with cards and notes and stuff, because I really don't. I just kinda write as I go, the ideas just flow. I mean I have a basic idea of how it's going to end but all that stuff in the middle is still coming to me.
3. What genre does your book fall under?
Psychological Thriller
4. What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Milla Jovovich would make an awesome Aingeal. The only other person I can think of would be Colm Meaney (Mikes from Star Trek) as Aingeal's boss. Here is a Pinterest board of my character line-up.
5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Aingeal goes through a second, darker transformation after being knocked down by another tragedy.
6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Self published. I really wish I could afford to go through an agency... someday maybe.
7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Still working on it, but been about three months and about 3/4 done.
8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Not sure really... I mean, I'm sure there are other books out there that are similar but I cannot think of them off the top of my head.
9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?
A dream actually. I dreamed the first part of the story and the rest just kinda followed once I started writing. Aingeal (the lead character) has a very strong voice and she is constantly waking me in the middle of the night with thoughts.
10. What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?
Aingeal is quite a strong female lead that is kick ass. She gets knocked down but keeps bouncing back stronger and more determined.

Photo Shoot of Intriuge
So yesterday I went out with my photographer and close friend Carol. We decided to shoot at the Iola Campus here in Rochester, NY. They are abandoned buildings, but we strictly shoot outside the buildings using them as a backdrop for the photographs.
So we get there, and as we are pulling in to the parking lot we are greeted by several Sheriff cars and two white buses of inmates. They were doing their community clean-up. So we ask if we can shoot and he tells us they will be done in about half an hour.
Okay fine, so we decide to drive around back to park, but there is already a car back there and we didn't want to intrude. Instead we went to Starbucks for some coffee. (I got myself a peppermint mocha.)
We head back about 40 minutes later and they are still there so we decide to just park in the back anyway, there's nobody in the car so no issues especially since we are not going to be using the building the car is parked by anyway.
So the first thing we do is walk around the building to figure out where we will be taking the pictures. As we walk around we notice every door on the building has been busted open and in one there were several large empty cartridges. So that doesn't stop us, we still do the shoot and get some really awesome pictures.
so, needless to say, the cover to book two of the Dark Angel Trilogy will be awesome.

NaNoWriMo Day 14
So it has been two weeks since the start of NaNoWriMo and I am a bit behind in my writing. I did not realize just how hard it was going to be. By this point I should technically have written 4,042 more words than I actually have. No worries though. Yesterday I wrote nearly 2,000 words and I will try to keep that up until I am caught up.
As far as the book goes, Aingeal is going through a lot and trying to keep it together, but I am beginning to worry about her.

Writing...
So, I am very strange in my writing style. Most of my story is based in quiet moments, so I generally don't have any music playing. Most of the time, it's me, my cats and the sound of the fan on the fireplace. Granted, occasionally Aingeal has some music going, so I will go out and listen to music that might fit her purpose, but it's mostly silence.
So, here I am... Writing a scene where she is trying to be as quiet as possible. The house is silent, the cats are asleep, it's just me and Aingeal sneaking into this darkened room... and messenger dings at me. Holy crap!
This is twice now I have managed to be startled while writing an intense scene in the novel. I just hope the readers feel the same intensity when they are reading it!

NaNoWriMo Day 8
So as you all already know, I joined NaNoWriMo to ensure I get this book done and on the "shelves" by the time I promised my few devoted readers.
Well, it's been quite an interesting time so far! Trying to juggle taking a Mythology Class, writing, and handling a family is difficult, but I am not going to let it deter me!
As of yesterday I should have been at 12,000 words... I only reached 11,102. Does it bother me? Not really. I will catch up, I will get ahead, I will fall behind again. It happens.
I have finished this weeks reading for the class and I am currently on lecture 8/10. Once that is done I will take the quiz, then the rest of the week is for writing. Okay, so I have to run to the grocery store at some point tomorrow but that won't take too long.
Basically, what I am saying is... If you're also doing the NaNoWriMo and you have a hectic life, don't let it get to you. Write when you can, live the best you can, and be happy with what you accomplish.

Day 4 of NaNoWriMo
So it's the first Sunday of NaNoWriMo, and they suggest we should be at a word count of at least 6,667 words.
I did not get any writing what-so-ever done yesterday thanks to this sinus crap that has taken over my head. This morning I woke up absolutely miserable. Been popping OTC sinus medications and pain relief all day just to feel somewhat bearable.
Anything other than sitting made me feel like my head was going to explode and send my eyeballs flying. So, here I sit on the couch. Fuzzy headed but coherent enough to put words to paper.
And I wrote.
Sometimes I would pause int he middle of a sentence and think, "Where the heck was I? Oh yeah!" And continue writing. Sometimes I would just stare at the screen wondering why the heck I am doing this. Sometimes my fingers were flying.
So, over the course of the day I managed to put down 3,495 words and Aingeal has taken a path I was not planning on her taking. Will have to see where this goes!
Oh, and my current count toward NaNoWriMo is 8286!

Writing frenzy!
So, I signed up for NaNoWriMo to give me the push I need to reach my goal. For those that do not know what this is, this is from their website:
I already had about 30,000 written, but my goal was to hit around 80-90,000 so I started counting from November 1st. As of right this moment the total count is at 35,896 (which means 5,896 toward my NaNoWriMo goal!)
So, if I complete the 50,000 goal and finish the novel I should reach my final goal of publishing book 2 by the end of the year! So exciting! Stay tuned for more updates.
National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000-word (approximately 175-page) novel by 11:59:59 PM on November 30.

eclectic
eclectic /iˈklektik/Some people take being referred to as eclectic as an insult but it is something I have striven for all my life. I have always wanted to be different, to stand out. I do not want to be another face blending into the crowd, cattle following the herd.
adjective
1. selecting or choosing from various sources.
2. made up of what is selected from different sources.
3. not following any one system, as of philosophy, medicine, etc., but selecting and using what are considered the best elements of all systems.
4. noting or pertaining to works of architecture, decoration, landscaping, etc., produced by a certain person or during a certain period, that derive from a wide range of historic styles, the style in each instance often being chosen for its fancied appropriateness to local tradition, local geography, the purpose to be served, or the cultural background of the client.
I dress in what feels comfortable, I choose my clothes by what is on top of the pile. I don't like dresses, heels or makeup. Never have, it's just not who I am.
Today I am wearing a pair of light grey terry capri's with over the knee grey, red and white striped socks and a grey shirt with Tinker Bell on it. I'm warm, I'm comfortable and I am happy.
Do I care what people think of the outfit? Not really. Well except for the older gentleman who made my day this morning.
I was out with the kids waiting for the bus and saw an older guy looking at the roof of the house across the street. He is dressed in blue jeans and a navy polo shirt, hair trimmed short and neat. Yesterday morning while waiting for the bus we saw a squirrel making a nest in that particular roof, so I approached him to let him know.
So, here I am in my grey outfit, with my medium blue fleece hoodie over it and a pair of slip-ons on my feet. Dark raspberry red hair, brushed but a little wild, with a big friendly smile. Wasn't sure how he'd react but he was quite friendly and happy to chat.
We talked a little then he said "Please don't take this wrong, but I love your eclectic style. It always impresses me when someone is willing to be who they really are."
So, I finally reached my personal goal and it felt really good.
My point is, be who you are. Love who you are, and never be afraid of what others will think. You are beautiful, never forget that.

For Nook Owners
So, I know people were interested in reading the series on the Nook, so after searching their site trying to figure out how to publish to the Nook, I finally emailed them. Here is what they told me:
So, it looks like it is all down to the publisher to decide, which means it will not be until at least October 22, 2012 (when my KDP contract ends) before the publisher will even consider it. For now, all I can recommend is to go to the print version on Barnes and Noble's website and click on the link "Want to read this on your NOOK? Request as NOOK Book from the publisher."
Wish there were more I could do.
Thank you for writing to us about the availability of a NOOK Book format for the book "Rise of the Dark Angel" by Carol Brearley.
We know that NOOK Book enthusiasts are eager to see more and more titles in digital form, and we're adding them on a daily basis -- so if you don't see a title you're interested in, please check back often.
We will instantly notify the publisher that you have requested such title in digital format.
Ultimately, it's the publisher's call whether to offer a title in digital format. Sometimes, publishers decide not to offer a digital version, even if (or especially if) a book is popular in print. For this reason, some very popular books and series are not yet available. But we are committed to bringing you the best selection of NOOK Books anywhere.
So, it looks like it is all down to the publisher to decide, which means it will not be until at least October 22, 2012 (when my KDP contract ends) before the publisher will even consider it. "Who I Am" by Aingeal
Who I Am
I am the pain you cannot see in her eyes,
I am anger you cannot feel in her heart.
I am the hate in her fists,
I am the revenge in her thoughts.
I am all of this brought to you,
I am the thing you will fear.
I am me,
I am the dark angel.
~ Aingeal Ó Cuinn

Working on Book Two
I've been working on book two and just finished off chapter five. Word count is currently at 19,121 total. This is just the rough draft, so I'm sure numbers will go up later, for now I am happy with the progress.
Aingeal is having some really heavy stuff thrown at her in this book. I do not even know yet how she is going to pull through it. Will have to see how it goes I guess.

Being and Indie Author
So, there are upsides and downsides of being an indie author. When I started down this path I knew it was not going to be easy, but I never imagined how difficult it really is.
So, first... Why I decided to be an indie author... Well, I looked into publishing services and went, "Holy crap! I can't afford that!" Then I looked into Amazon's free self publishing services.
First there is Kindle Direct Publishing. Here's what their site says about the service:
They also offer their Kindle Select service, also free:
Create Space is a print-on-demand service also offered for free from Amazon. Yes, it's free, yes it lets you get your book out there in print format, but wow do they take a lot of the profits! Because of this you need to ask more for the book.
So now your book is published, here's the fun part. How do you sell it? I mean, those expensive publishing services do the work for you, but if you can't afford to do that, what can you do? Sell yourself. Here is where I am having the hardest time. Trying to get my book out there without spending money is extremely difficult, but not impossible.
So, here I am trying to write the second book in the trilogy, raise a family and promote my book. It's a trial for sure, but it is worth it. I've done one interview (stay tuned for its release) so far and hoping to do another one soon. I have an authors page and ad on Goodreads, I am now on FictFact, I tweet daily on Twitter, I even have an authors page on Facebook! Still it does not seem to be enough. All I can do though is keep trying and not give up.
If you are looking to help out please share this link to my book. Even if you can't buy it right now, if you share the link you are still doing something to help the cause, and thank you!

With Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) you can self-publish your books on the Amazon Kindle Store. It's free, fast, and easy. Books self-published through KDP can participate in the 70% royalty program and are available for purchase on Kindle devices and Kindle apps for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, PC, Mac, BlackBerry, and Android-based devices. With KDP, you can self-publish books in many languages - including English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian - and specify pricing in US Dollars, Pounds Sterling, and Euros. You will also find useful information on our active community forum.
They also offer their Kindle Select service, also free:
Introducing KDP Select - a new option to make money and promote your book. When you make your book exclusive to Kindle for at least 90 days, it will be part of the Kindle Owners' Lending Library for the same period and you will earn your share of a monthly fund when readers borrow your books from the library. You will also be able to promote your book as free for up to 5 days during these 90 days. So, I signed up, uploaded my novel, cover and looked into their other service.

So I am working on the final edit (or what I call "polishing the book") and my muse fell asleep on the job:

back of a sketch in Aingeal’s book
Have you ever been
hurt so bad by someone you wish you were dead?
Or perhaps your pain was so deep you wished they were dead?
I have known pain like this and I will do something about it.
Hurt no more, fear no more, cry no more.
Revenge is sweet and it is mine.

Rise of a Dark Angel is going to the editor
I've just finished the final rewrite of Rise of a Dark Angel and it is going to my editor this weekend. This is an exciting time for me for sure, and I even completed the registration process through Amazon's free services, so as soon as I get the changes back and fix-er up the book will be published.

Nearly Complete
I just finished editing chapter 14, only two more to go and I even lined up an editor so we are almost there. I have until Thursday to finish my side of the editing, before kids go on summer break.

Only 3 Chapters Left in Rewrite!
I'm down to the last three chapters and I have set a deadline of Friday June 22, 2012. After that I will need to have it read by an editor and then it goes to Amazon.com to be published. I will be offering it in both Kindle ($1.99) and print-on-demand ($7.95) versions, so keep an eye out. I hate that the PoD version has to be priced so high but unfortunately they take a lot more out of you than with the eBook version.
The book is currently sitting at 66,710 words, not quite going to reach my goal of 75,000 but not too bad. That's about 219 pages according to my estimator. Not too shabby for a first timer.
Anyway, I cannot wait to get this book completed and out there so I can start working on book two.

Nearly done...
There are only four chapters left for me to edit and rewrite and then I need to find myself someone to do a final edit for me. It's almost time for Aingeal to spread her wings and take flight. I sure hope you are there with us when she does.

Another chapter down...
I only have 6 chapters left to edit and rewrite before it goes to someone for final editing. I am both excited and nervous!

Rise of the Dark Angel - book description
Aingeal was just like any other young woman in NYC. She knew
the dangers, was safe most of the time but occasionally she forgot how
dangerous it was. One night on her way to work her world was turned upside down
by an evil man and she would never forget again.
Survival alone was not an option for her. Revenge would be
the only way to clear her soul of the darkness placed by that man, and if a few
criminals are taught a lesson along the way all the better. Aingeal rises up
out of the darkness to take on the devil that haunts her. The only thing
keeping her from going over the edge is her boyfriend Dean but if he ever found
out her secret he would not only break her heart, he would ruin her plans. So
by day she is still the sweet woman she was before, but by night she is The Dark
Angel.
An edgy psychological thriller, Rise of the Dark Angel is
not for the faint of heart with some mild violence and references to sexual
abuse and torture.

A little About Aingeal (from her)
Who am I? You may be wondering. What makes me so special?
Well I started off normal. I lived my life head down, oblivious to the world around me. I went on my way, ignoring to stay safe. That is the worst thing to do however. I was taken. I was broken. I survived. Now I an a watcher and I am ready. I try to live a "normal" life. I tried to go back to "not seeing" but it was impossible. I cannot just sit back and let the pain go on. I must do something about it.

Book Progress
I appologize for being gone so long, but with everything that's been going on here I've been crazy busy. I am now back and working again. Reached the halfway point with the rewrite and increased the word count by 3,390 words! I am currently at 68,880 but I hoped to reach at least 75,000 by the time I am done.
The line behind darkness and light is not gray, just a little clouded.

Not enough time...
Aingeal has been hounding me to get back to work on editing and rewriting her
story. She doesn't seem to understand the whole family responsibility thing.
Maybe one day she will settle down and start a family of her own. Until then, I
better get to work to appease her.

YMCA group meeting, the case Aingeal couldn't resist
**Warning Slightly Mature Content**
Hello everyone my name is **** ******* and I survived a rape. Here's my story...
I was on my way home from an emergency walk with my puppy Binny and I went through the back door of the complex, off the parking lot. There was a man coming down the stairs as I came in. He was wearing blue jeans and a white shirt with a baseball cap blocking me from seeing his eyes. Just as we passed he grabbed me, throwing his hand over my mouth and threw me to the stairs. He held me down and threatened to hurt my puppy. What kind of person would hurt a puppy? At first I fought, but he had Binny's leash.. he had put his leash over the stair rail and he started pulling on the leash, lifting poor Binny's front paws off the ground and he started whimpering. My God I didn't know what to do, my poor baby, so I gave in. He raped me, right there on the back stairs to my apartment complex, then he walked away and left Binny and I there, both of us whimpering from his abuse.
It was a while before someone else came in and found me there, my face all bruised and my pants still around my ankles as I clutched at Binny, rocking in shock. They called the police and sat with me until they came. You know those security cameras that supposedly keep us safe? They were turned off, the b@$tard knew it too! They still haven't caught him, but the cameras are on now, and there's a security guard at the back door. I still don't feel safe.

Message from Aingeal:
This is what I hear when I go to these meetings, women being abused and used by men... no monsters... that remain free to hurt others. This is why I do what I do, to set things right. not everyone will agree with me, but I do not care, I don't do it for them, I do it for those poor women living in fear.

Dear Deviant
I watch you.
I see what you do.
I know where you go.
I know when you deviate.
I see when you make a mistake,
And I will come for you.
I watch you.
And I wait.

Absense
Aingeal has been missing the past few days, she must have found her latest... project. Without her here I do not really have much to say so I guess we wait for her to return.
On a side note, the rewrite/edit phase of her story is coming along.

Metaphor by Aingeal
Butterflies start off a simple creature that just goes along doing it's everyday tasks. He eats, works and wraps himself in a warm tight cocoon. Within the walls of that cocoon he is safe. Finally, when he breaks free from this safety he learns to soar. Spreading his wings he takes flight and breaks free from that grounded life.
Have you learned to soar yet?

Chapter 5 and message from Aingeal
Greetings from Pixie! Just finished edit/rewrite of chapter 5 and I can't believe some of things I left out! Added 836 words and some vital information.
Oh, and Aingeal wants to make a statement, it's all I got out of her today... "Aren't dreams a *****?" (I had to edit it, but to give you a hint, that last word starts with a 'b'!)

Chapter 4
Greetings followers from Pixie. I have just finished editing and rewriting chapter 4 of the novel bringing it up 847 more words! With each chapter I go through the story seems to grow a little, adding more details and interest.
I am hoping to complete a chapter a day, having it ready to go to an editor in a couple weeks tops. Aingeal is growing impatient with my progress and has already started dictating the second book to me, so I better get a move on.

Message from Aingeal
To all the men out there that have hurt women... beware for I may come for you one day, and if I do you will know pain too.
To all the women out there that have been abused, it was not your fault. You are not a victim. If you need my help, watch for this ad:
You may not meet me there, but I will learn your story and I might even seek justice for you if justice has not been served.

Conversation between Pixie and Aingeal
{Aingeal} So someone asked me what I would consider my life's story... Well I guess you could say it is a Thriller of sorts.
{Pixie} Psychological Thriller maybe?
{Aingeal} True, there are a lot of head games and such going on isn't there.
{Pixie} Head games? I thought you were more into physical torture?
{Aingeal} *giggles* Shhhh don't give away my secrets.
{Pixie} If you don't want me to talk about the book then why did you have me start this blog?
{Aingeal} Well all the important people have blogs now, so shouldn't I have one?
{Pixie} You're important?
{Aingeal} *glares*
{Pixie} What? It's not like anyone knows who you are.
{Aingeal} Yet... *walks away*

Introduction
Greetings and welcome. My name is Aingeal Ó Cuinn. This blog
is for me, it will walk you through my life as I transform into the Dark Angel.
My friend Pixie shall put my story to page, as she does she may share things with you here. Know that what she shares is only what I allow, nothing more.
Have you ever been hurt so bad by someone you wish you were dead?
Or perhaps your pain was so deep you wished they were dead?
I have known pain like this and I will do something about it.
Hurt no more, fear no more, cry no more.
Revenge is sweet and it is mine.
