An interesting moral dilema. On the one hand you have a brutalized victim who (bless her soul) refuses to be a victim. But on the other hand we have a preying vigilante - a raptor who will forgive herself anything in the name of vengeance. So many times throughout the course of this book I found myself thinking, "No! No! Turn away from it all! There's a life out there just waiting for you! Don't throw it all away!" An all too human reaction, I suppose, from someone who has never experienced such trauma, to the all too human reaction of someone who has. Ms. Brearley was masterful at creating that rift and maintaining it throughout the story. Very well done indeed! And the ending was no slouch either!
